Welsh Slate - The Company
Penrhyn Quarry was operated by Alfred McAlpine (now Carillion) from the 1960's. In 1997 Alfred McAlpine acquired the Blaenau Ffestiniog, Pen yr Orsedd and Cwt-y-Bugail quarries from the Williams company. In December 2007 the assetts of Welsh Slate were acquired by Kevin Lagan and directors of Welsh Slate. The new company is Welsh Slate Limited trading as Welsh//Slate.
Kevin Lagan is a Belfast based businessman with world wide interests in cement, brick and roof tile manufacturing, slate distribution as well as property development, house building contracting and quarrying.
Welsh//Slate continue to operate the four quarries for roofing slate, aggregates and architectural products. The company is forecast to have a turnover of £27m in 2008.
